News![]() It's a daggerboard story The raid is really showing to be one of the most demanding and tough races in the world, both mentally and phisically. In Day 5, the lack of sleep, altered diet and the many hours of hard sailing (and even paddling) under tough conditions have started to show in the crews and the boats. The balance of leg 7, with start in Norra Stavsudda to Grinda, is quite explanatory: 2 more teams are out of the raid (Swe 49 with no daggerborards left and W4 due to a completely torn jib), 2 more retired from the leg and went straight to Grinda (Ursuit and Swe 42) and many of the rest reported damages mainly in their daggerboards. The reason: It was certainly difficult sailing today with strong winds up to 20 knots+ and in a complicated course full of threats. Many of the boats hit the rocks at any stage during the leg and that is causing serious troubles to the teams, because they are running out of daggerboards. Overall leaders, French Eric Proust and Romain Motteau onboard Citus have no spare daggerboards left, and only one complete. That means they will have to be really careful in the last legs ; FG Porsche, who happily came back to the race after two days, are sailing with just one; Ursuit plan to do the same in next leg; and a long etcetera (leaking hulls, small cracks, Team Piano's broken boom...) of different damages -some more important than others- that could decide the result of the race. Good news is the return of Team Premier Global Services for leg 8. The Norwegians have repaired the damages in their hull. Date: 2009-08-21 14:37:16 << Back to News |
