Sailors are the best to speak about the competition
Neal Mc Donald (UK):
"It was a gruelling but thoroughly rewarding event that along with all the other challenges had some incredible sailing. It had been a far tougher event than we had imagined and because of that a greater sense of achievement finishing it. It is an event that mixes an incredible number of talents, navigation, organisation, planning and sheer endurance along with basic seamanship and sailing skills. Coupled with that it takes place in one of the most beautiful sailing areas in the world (not that we always had time to look at it). It is certainly an event we will take part in again next time we will have a better idea of just what we are taking on!"

A sailing event adapted for the TV
The main goal with the Archipelago Raid is to create a sailing event perfectly adapted for the TV and media interest. A media team and boats will give the opportunity to TV teams and media to follow the Raid from A to Z. Journalists will be close to the adventure and the action like never before in a long-term sailing event. Interviews on the checkpoints and from the boats, the media will be part of the adventure and will be living the event from the inside. Wet, tired and cold, the strong personalities of the sailors involved in the Raid will provide anecdotes and human stories all along the course. The action, tension and suspense will last until the finishing line.

The teams
The Archipelago Raid is an international event. Competitors from New Zealand, USA, UK, France, Switzerland, Australia, Nederland and Nordic countries have already taken part in the event. From Olympic gold medallists, solo-sailors, multihulls or dinghies sailors, match racers, offshore racers. The competitors of the Archipelago Raid had very varied sailing backgrounds. The success of the first editions spreads the rumour in the sailing world that this event has something different. Difficulties, endurance, adrenaline, speed, strategy, crazy navigation, organisation, planning; complete skills for both competitors are required and that attract the bests.

Rules (See details in the "Rules")
To be easily understandable for a wide audience, the Archipelago Raid rules are very simple. Only the best team can win!

Yearly event
Every year, the Archipelago Raid is organized around Midsummer (end of June / beginning of July), when the nights are extremely short in the 60's North latitude. Exceptional phenomena for the foreigners, Midsummer is also for the Swedish the symbol of sun, light, party, music, dance and happiness. The atmosphere, the charm and the lights during Midsummer consecrate the Archipelago as the "Paradise of the Baltic Sea".

Stockholm, Åland and Finnish Archipelagos
The Scandinavian Islands are the unique arena of the competition. Rocks and islands everywhere, the archipelago is one of the most difficult areas for navigation and gives the possibility to create an exceptional course through the difficulties of wonderful landscapes. Sandhamn, Möja, Fejan, Rödlöga, Finhamn, Grinda, Utö... The romantic names of the 100.000 islands become daily nightmares for the competitors.

Atlant Ocean Racing
Based in Stockholm, Atlant Ocean Racing AB is specialised in managing international sailing projects and events. After the success of Intrum Justitia, EF Language, EF Education in the Whitbread, ASSA Abloy in the Volvo Ocean Race, The SAP Match Cup and the 60' trimarans in the Nordic Countries, Atlant Ocean Racing is using its expertise in sailing and adventure multi-sport events (Raid Gauloises) to produce the Archipelago Raid.

The concept
The concept is simple. Each team sails intensely day and night on a Formula 18 (5,5 m catamaran), along a unique course drawn among 100.000 rocks and islands. On the way, the competitors have to find 20-25 checkpoints located on islands (pontoons, beaches, boats, lighthouses) and described in the "Archipelago Raid Book" (latitude, longitude). The teams are free to choose their route between two checkpoints.

Utö
Utö is probably the most complete destination in the archipelago. There is a hotel, a youth hostel, a noted restaurant, an exciting history and a great deal more to see and discover. The 10 km-long island has about 240 permanent inhabitants. There ar...
