Grönskär
Grönskär, three nautical miles east of Sandhamn, has a beautiful 26-metre lighthouse known as Queen of the Baltic. There was already a high wooden cairn here in the 1600s. A lighthouse was built from granite and sandstone in 1770. -Three families lived on Grönskär all year round to take care of the lighthouse. They were the chief lighthouse-keeper, the lighthouse-keeper and the lighthouse-keeper assistantís families. Grönskärs lighthouse was turned out in 1961. A lighthouse was needed in another position because the speed of freighters and passenger -boats had increased. A caisson light, Revengegrundet, took over. The lighthouse was completely renovated in the mid 1990s, and relit in autumn 2000.
