Fejan
Fejan has an exciting modern history. When a new cholera epidemic swept across Europe at the end of the 1800s, Swedish authorities tried to stop the disease before it entered the country. The east coast quarantine station was hastily built on Fejan. More than 30,000 Estonians fled by boat across the Baltic Sea when Soviet troops invaded Estonia in September 1944. Fejan became a transition point for these refugees. In 1994, the Archipelago Foundation began leasing part of the island and created an ìArchipel-ago Centreî, which includes some of the older and culturally significant buildings.
